For as long as humans have existed, the moon has been a symbol of mysticism, romance and the cycles of nature. The moon influences the seasons and the tides, and has been a messenger of renewal and of harvest. It won’t be a surprise that the spiritual meaning of the moon is strongly related to the moon’s role in nature.

As the opposing force to the sun, who represents activity and the day, the moon represents receptivity, the night and all that is hidden. It is the mystic illuminating light that shines when we need it the most. The moon asks you to take a closer look at what you cannot see. She can illuminate the path when you don’t know where to go. However, just like the moon itself, there is more to its spiritual meaning.

How Does The Moon Relate To Spirituality?

To understand how the moon relates to spirituality, it is important to mention that events on earth are mirroring events in astrology. For this reason, many planets and celestial bodies have an effect on what we are experiencing in our lives (if this interests you, make sure to get your birth chart). Because the moon is so close to the earth, and affects our lives in many ways, humans have always felt a great connection to the moon.

Because we are spiritual beings, and are all an integral part of nature, the moon is an important spiritual influence on who we are as humans. The cycle of the moon influences the energies that we are experiencing on earth. During each moon cycle there is a time of renewal and an energy peak that we all experience the effects of. For women the effect is even stronger because their fertility cycle directly correlates with the cycle of the moon.

What Does The Moon Symbolize Spiritually?

Spiritually, the moon is the symbol of the night and represents all things that are hidden. What is often hidden are our deepest feelings and our inner voice (our subconscious). The moon can illuminate them and can show us the path we need to take, as long as we are open to listen.

Because the spiritual meaning of the moon is related to our intuition, feelings, our inner voice and our connection with the higher realms, the moon is considered a feminine planet. The moon is also directly connected to the female cycle. The sun on the contrary, who represents what can be seen and what is active, is considered a masculine planet.

In order for us to truly shine (like the sun), we need to listen to our intuition (the moon). Only when both are in balance in each of us, we can truly be happy.

Why Is The Moon A Feminine Symbol?

One of the reasons that the moon is a feminine symbol, is that women are very strongly connected to the moon because of their own moon cycle. The moon represents the fertility cycle of both women and of the land. It is a cycle of growth, climax, healing and rebirth.

Also, the moon is associated with the things that cannot be seen: our intuition, feelings, our inner voice and our connection with the higher realms. As these things are all associated with the feminine, and because women have a direct connection to the moon’s cycle, the moon has become a symbol of femininity.

For ages, women (our female ancestors) have gathered in moon circles to celebrate and share the phases of the moon together. Traditionally, these moon circles are held during new moon and during full moon. New moon is a time for setting intentions, and full moon is a time for forgiveness. What Is The Connection Between A Woman And The Moon?

The connection between a woman and the moon is very strong because a woman’s monthly cycle directly correlates with the cycle of the moon. Although, in our modern world, most women’s cycles are not exactly aligned with the moon, the cycle itself is the same. This also means that women will physically experience different waves of energy throughout their cycle.

A woman’s period correlates with the new moon phase, which is a time of rest, renewal and contemplation. It is no wonder that during this time, women can strongly feel the need to retract and rest. While during the full moon phase (ovulation), a woman is at the peak of her energy and is physically called to be most active.

Why Do Women Need To Align With The Moon?

The connection between women and the moon is very strong because a woman’s monthly cycle directly correlates with the cycle of the moon. To make best use of their energy, women need to align with the moon phases and the phases of their own natural cycle.

In our modern world, where everything seemingly has to work on a constant 9-to-5 production schedule, there is not always space to incorporate these energetic stages naturally. It can be the reason why some women are struggling with their energy levels.

By being aware of the natural cycle, it is easier to plan ahead. Try to plan most activities during the peak phase and take time out during renewal. By making use of the energy that is naturally available, the body can function in its most optimal way.

What Does The Moon Card Mean In Tarot?

The spiritual meaning of the moon is very well brought to life in the Tarot. The Moon card in the Tarot asks you to take a closer look at what is hidden. What is going on that you are not seeing? What is brewing under the surface? To see what you need to know, you need to listen to your intuition and connect to your subconscious.

If you listen to what the Moon card has to tell you, and have the courage to look for what causes your deep hidden pain and negative emotions, you can truly heal yourself. This is a necessary step to move forward in life and be ready to shine like the sun. (It is not surprising that The Sun is the next card in the Major Arcana).

The Moon card is also associated with illusion, emotions, a light in the dark, illumination of the path, psychic abilities and creativity. The moon represents our instinct (our intuition) and what is driving us below the surface. On the card this is depicted by the dog vs the wolf (our civilized self vs our primal self). To which of the two will you listen?

The crab and the water on the card represent our emotions. By getting out of the water, which means working through deep emotions, the crab can start to walk his path to the promised land. Also, the moon is related to the Zodiac sign of Cancer.

The Moon card is the 18th card in the Tarot’s Major Arcana. The Tarot consists of the Major and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana represents the journey of the fool (the soul) through life in 22 cards. In order to learn all the lessons that life has to teach us, a person needs to go through all these 22 lessons to heal and be complete.

The Moon card in Tarot is one of my favorite Tarot cards! I love the art work and what the card represents. What associations do you get when you see the moon card? Let me know in the comments!

Moon Symbolism In Love

The moon is also known to be a symbol of love and romance. Besides having a great mystic appeal that feels like a welcome light in a dark night, the moon also symbolizes balance between our outward self and our inner self (our intuition). You can only love others if you love yourself, and you can only love yourself if you are connected to your inner voice.

In a Tarot love reading, the moon indicates that there is a deeper force at play than what is seen at the surface. Are you honest to each other and are you honest to yourself? Things are not what they seem and the moon card can be an indication of illusion, deception, uncertainty or confusion.

The moon card can also indicate miscommunication or a disbalance in some way. Or it can simply tell you to trust your intuition, because you already know what is right, you already have all the answers you need.
